NDLEA Arrests 80-Year-Old Grandpa Intercepts 14.9 billion Opioids

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) made headlines with the arrest of an 80-year-old grandpa in connection with a massive drug trafficking operation. The arrest was part of a broader operation in which the agency intercepted opioids worth an estimated ₦14.9 billion. This significant bust highlights the continued efforts of the NDLEA to tackle the growing drug crisis in Nigeria, particularly the trafficking and abuse of opioids and other dangerous substances.

The elderly man, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was apprehended after intelligence reports linked him to the shipment of a large cache of opioids. The drugs, primarily synthetic opioids, were believed to be intended for distribution within Nigeria and potentially smuggled into neighboring countries. The shipment included a large quantity of Tramadol, a powerful painkiller often abused for recreational purposes, as well as other dangerous narcotics.

NDLEA operatives, acting on a tip-off, tracked the movement of the drugs before making the arrest. The 80-year-old suspect reportedly played a key role in the coordination of the drug trafficking syndicate, using his age to avoid suspicion. Authorities have been shocked by his involvement, as older individuals are rarely implicated in such large-scale drug operations.

NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.) lauded the agency’s efforts in cracking down on drug traffickers, noting that this operation underscores the complexity of the drug trade, which continues to involve people of all ages and backgrounds. The agency has intensified its fight against the rising menace of drug abuse in the country, with opioids like Tramadol posing a significant public health challenge.

The NDLEA has vowed to continue its aggressive stance against drug cartels and traffickers, ensuring that they are brought to justice, regardless of their age or status. The 80-year-old suspect is currently in custody, awaiting further investigation and trial, while authorities work to dismantle the broader network behind the seized drugs. This bust is considered one of the largest opioid seizures in recent months, reflecting the scale of the drug crisis in Nigeria.
