Bill to create Ogoja state from Cross River passes second reading

The push for the creation of Ogoja State stems from long-standing agitations by the people of the northern part of Cross River, which includes the Ogoja, Yala, Bekwarra, Obudu, and Obanliku local government areas. These groups argue that the creation of a new state will bring about more effective governance, allow for better access to federal resources, and accelerate the socio-economic development of the region. Advocates also believe that Ogoja State will address the perceived marginalization of the area within the current Cross River structure.

The bill, having passed its second reading, will now move to the committee stage, where lawmakers will scrutinize the proposal in greater detail. The process includes considerations of constitutional requirements, such as the support of two-thirds of the local governments in the area, as well as approval from a referendum by residents. The National Assembly will also take into account factors like population size, economic viability, and the geographical layout of the proposed state.

Supporters of the bill have expressed optimism, noting that creating Ogoja State could lead to a more equitable distribution of political power in Cross River and the overall geopolitical zone. They argue that such a move would give the region greater representation at the federal level, improve infrastructure, and open up opportunities for local businesses and industries to thrive.

On the other hand, some critics argue that the creation of new states across Nigeria, including Ogoja State, may not necessarily solve governance challenges but could instead lead to increased administrative costs. Some contend that rather than creating new states, existing governance structures should be strengthened to ensure better service delivery and accountability.

As the bill moves forward, the debate surrounding the creation of Ogoja State is expected to intensify. It raises broader questions about state creation as a solution to Nigeria’s complex political and socio-economic issues, and whether this strategy can truly address the concerns of marginalized communities across the country. Ultimately, the outcome of the legislative process will determine if Ogoja becomes Nigeria’s newest state, bringing with it a fresh wave of political and economic dynamics to the region.
